It doesn't happen all the time, and I really fail to see the pattern in it.
Also, I think that's the only major thing now that keeps this forum from going prime time. I just hope that Michael will be able to pipnpoint the problem soon and iron it out.

Are there plans to launch the forum with a news item and a link under community on the Gobolinux page?

that's what I pretty much hope for. otherwise why bother at all?
however, now there are some technical issues still remaining - so they need polishing first.

I haven't experienced it in a few days now - is it still happening? I have made a few tweaks, although I think a lot of the original problem was external in origin. I'm hopeful that it's gone (Load average: 0.06 0.03 0.04). Regardless, it will almost certainly be moving in a few weeks' time to another server, which will clear up any remaining problems (and, of course, maybe introduce some new ones, but...).

    Yes, it will be there.

I don't know if it's implementional, but I every page takes a lot time to load. My browser make 5-15 requests per page, instead of 1-2 requests, which makes browsing real slow, as each request has a rtt.

Micheal, have you disabled pipelining in your server?

The multiple requests are (should be) just Etag/If-Modified-Since fetches of stylesheets, javascript and images - so the response would only be a 204 Not Modified, if the request was made at all. Pipelining is on, and the limits are more than large enough to contain all those requests. If they're all actually being fetched each time that could be a problem, but it's all static content so I don't see why they should be.

well, my problem isn't that/if each request downloads anything, because I have the bandwidth, it's that each request has a small delay. Therefore it's frustrating with that many requests. This is the only page/site (that I use daily) that does this afaik.

It's static content, it should be cached locally. I have just turned on explicit Cache-Control headers, so hopefully that will make it happen. Ultimately, it's up to the browser though. It's possible that the forum's (very cache-averse) headers are taking priority over the individual components', in which case there's not much to be done about it. I'm not sure what the RFC says about that.

I've dug up some similar slowdown reports on the original community - it seem that the database may be the problem. Have a look:
    http://lussumo.com/community/discussion/3830/why-is-vanilla-a-bit-slow/
    http://lussumo.com/community/discussion/2811/addons--forum-slow-vanilla/
    http://lussumo.com/community/discussion/2863/noticing-a-big-slowdown-on-my-forum/

edit: yet it might be something related to caching routines. for some time the forum flies, but I've noticed that when the slowdown occurs and I visit my profile page - my remotely hosted avatar disappears. I have to do a "show image" click - and than it returns back. concluding from the aforementioned - it might seem that the server (or vanilla itself) forces cache flush once in a while - and it is much more frequent than one would expect.

for the last hour the speed increased drastically! it's almost instant if you don't refresh the page manually.

That's strange. I've not experienced any timeout yet, but I can confirm the lag.

Maybe it is due to an invasion of newcomers charmed by the power of gobo :D

same here. however I don't get "classical" timeouts - instead there are sometimes very long page loading times when I open forum from my workplace. at home - only lags.
I think timeouts/loading times may have something to do with forum-server issues. the lag, at the same time, might be smth DB-related.
