i can make the start new discussions all one color.

in terms of which greens and blues, i would add one color to each...

That's exactly what I meant. I think we can just drop the third colors and use the two left. So the "back to discussion" and "top of the page" links would become first/second green (don't know which one atm), and so would be for the category at the top.
I would do this way:

Whenever we have a link, use the lighter blue/green to display it when not clicked, and the darker otherwise.
Nicknames would be better second blue imo, while the text just next to the right would be second green, and so would be the links all to the right (for quoting and so on).

Don't know though without seeing it in action :D
