So the forums are up and running and ready for use - I am still looking through extensions to install, so suggestions are welcome. You may also get the occasional error if you view the page while an extension is half-installed. If that happens, wait a minute or two and try again.

I have created this forum and an English-language support forum. I imagine that'll be the busiest one, but we can also have others in other languages if we have moderators that speak them. Those of you who put your hands up on the mailing list, a quick list of languages you could deal with would be useful here.

I have installed the language packs for all the languages the main site is translated into (except Russian) and an extension that lets you choose your interface language. Requests for more are welcome.

Other suggestions for how the categories should be laid out would also be welcome - I've just kept it simple here, I don't think we should multiply the forums too far just yet. And any other comments people have too.

As well, if someone wants to try their hand at styling the forum to look more like the main site it would be great. It's not too bad right now, so it's not urgent, but consistency is nice.

There are many interesting extensions that add a great deal of functionality to this forum, the "quoting" for example.. etc. I'll go and check it later and give some suggestions to consider. ok?

Concerning the languages. My native is ukrainian, however I don't know anybody else from Ukraine who uses Gobo for now. So I'll ask to create the relevant category when there is at least someone else except me on this forum who would need it.
I am also fluent in russian so I can moderate that forum if such need arises. Well, and english of course))

BTW, I already have a suggestion concerning the categories on this forum. I think we should have at least a kind of "forum debug/issues/testing" category to report anything that is board-, not Gobo-specific. As well as "other/offtopic" category to be able to socialize on different topics besides Gobo as well (like "Google is Evil" thread MJ Ray started on the lists)))

And about styling issue. I'll get a closer look at that, however I don't know when I'll be able to post some results if any. Sorry, for that - I'm still in training to be a web-designer))

    Ah, I almost forgot..
There are already 2 issues with this board that need some bugfixing:
    1. the "agreement" you have to read and agree to when applying for membership on this forum is not available. it just redirects to some error page.
    2. sometimes there are weird lags (5-7 sec) when browsing this forum. I wonder of it has smth to do with DNS propagating or anything...

For categories I think that there has to be an off topic category. A forum category for the forum (and site), where one can discuss layout, translations, extensions etc, is also good. Those two are required imo.

Another category, that is not required but is nice to have, is development, just to separate those discussions from the support questions.

Molfar replied at the same time I was writing my reply, so I guess we have consensus on the 'board/forum/site' and 'off topic' categories. :)

For the issues, I saw the agreement just fine, but I too experiance lag when browsing. The lag shouldn't be DNS related, as I use the hosts "hack".

about that agreement - then we have no choice but to wait and see what other member have to share on the issue). I hope it was smth temporary and is already fixed.
and that strange lag - I'm curious if Michael has any considerations what the problem might be with it..

When I first signed up (last night), I also couldn't view the Terms of Service. I just tried again and can't. It opens a new window containing:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function ForceIncomingString() in /home/goboforum/www/extensions/LanguageSelector/LanguageSelector.php on line 12

Which looks similar to what I saw last night.

Those errors are odd. I have fixed it, but it's a bit of a hack. It will also restrict us to English-language terms of service, although that's probably not such a big problem. It can be fixed later if necessary.

I am aware of the lag, it seems that something (possibly this) is hammering the MySQL server pretty hard. I will look into what I can do to fix that. It's difficult to track down because it's so intermittent. I will probably move this over to another server in a few weeks time which will hopefully clear it up if it's still happening then.

I will create those suggested categories now, they seem reasonable.

I'd like to change the 'Forum issues' category to be more general, also including the site (as the forum is/will be "on site"). Also remove the 'issues' part, as the discussions also can/should be about suggestions, hints and so on.

Great, I think these categories are enough to begin with.

Another issue I have is that the categories are displayed as numbers in the URL. Is it possible to have the category name display instead? So instead of having the URL look like http://forum.gobolinux.org/4/ when one browses "Forum & Website Discussion" have it look like http://forum.gobolinux.org/Forum & Website Discussion/ or similar.

I think this addon might help - Friendly Urls 1 (http://lussumo.com/addons/index.php?PostBackAction=AddOn&AddOnID=30)

Also, 2 Michael - if you eventually move to another server and decide to use LigHTTPd server instead of Apache - this mod might be of use - http://lussumo.com/addons/index.php?PostBackAction=AddOn&AddOnID=98

Friendly URLs is already installed (that's what makes it "discussion/2/forum-setup-and-administrivia" rather than "discussion.php?DiscussionID=2"). It doesn't give the categories named URLs, just changes them from index.php?CategoryID=x. The actual work of it is done in the core, not the "extension", so there's not that much that's configurable about it. Hopefully that will change in a future release.

Also, although I think the categories are set up well enough for now, if we're going to have other non-English support forums I need to know a) who's going to moderate them and b) the text to name the forum and its description. I created the two I was qualified to name, but I assume there'll be more - hu_HU and pt_BR are the obvious ones, but there could be others.

Regrding the lag and hammering - I notice that everytime I open a new page in the forum there are about 15-20 separate, subsequent requests. Maybe that has something to do with it?

i've made a style for the forum to make it look more like the main site, i dont know if you would like it, but i do :P.
also i made a theme which has the same style as default but the theme adds the 6 links that are on the main site on the top right.
And i copied just the style for the new theme so that new styles can be made for the new theme easily if it is used.
    the files are:
    GoboLinux-Style.zip 75kb
    GoboLinux-Theme.zip 109kb
    new-Gobo-Style.zip 106kb

the last file there is the copied style for the new theme.
I uploaded them to a fileserver, dont know if its a good one but looks good.

I've installed all of those, I think, but they don't seem to do anything? At least, I can't tell the difference between any one of them and what's here now. Did I miss a step somewhere?

Frankly speaking, I'd rather prefer the vanilla Vanilla)). This new theme is too heavy on my eyes with all those acidic colors and stuff. Also, it seems to be a bit broken right now, at least on my monitor (wide 1920x1200) - the "discussions, categories, search and account" panels is all the way left instead of being centered and it looks rather ugly...(same goes for "sign in" upper notification).

    2 Michael
Is it possible to have 2+ styles on this site when everyone can choose one that suits him best? Maybe a kind of plug-in or manual editing or smth?

The reason the colours look acid is that green. The wrong colour is used for headings (and other places); instead of #occ/#odd (can't really find which applies, as the css is multileveled) it should be #50b0a0.

I'd prefer the same logo image as on the main site and the wiki, i.e. the one with a gradient.

@vazub: I think the placement of the tabs i intentional.

sorry about that, i was away for a week so i couldnt explain anything... basically the way i did it was the new "theme" had those logos for "documentation/download/recipes" etc... and the new "style" was all the colour/positioning changes.

What i'm going to do is edit the theme to make it have the vanilla vanilla colours with those logos, and the my new "style" as a non-default style, so that the colours will remain the same for everybody unless they specifically choose the new style...

    would this be better?

As for the color/positioning complaints... the 'discussion/category' panel was moved to the left intentially, but i will center it again because i can see how it would be problematic on much higher resolutions than the resolution i'm on. and changing the green i will try that too. so hopefully by the end of the day i will have all that but the new theme with default vanilla colours shouldnt take me too long.

ps. just for clarification purposes, the 'theme' referes to the php behind the site and the style refers to the images and css. so as far as i can tell the main issues are with the new style but not necessarily the new theme.

Ok, here's the new theme with the default vanilla style.
The only changes to the style are to make the header a bit higher and center the "is logged in" to make room for the icons.
GoboLinux-Theme-002 (so the colors are still exactly the same, for the new colours see the style below.)

and here is the new style for the theme:
GoboLinux-Style-002, this should be added to the theme's directory but not applied to all users, then users can choose to apply it themselves if they like the colors. Also, please let me know if you still have difficulty reading anything as i would like to make the style as usable as possible. I centered the "discussion/categories/search" panel and left aligned the "signed in as" label.

vazub: this new approach will be like you say, with 2 styles, the normal vanilla colours and the new ones.

Posted By: sambarinoOk, here's the new theme with the default vanilla style.

Wow, now this one looks a lot better than the first try. Nice!
I am still not sure about the colours though. Thus, I'd prefer having a choice for several styles (vanilla colours included).

EDIT: just saw your last comment about having 2 styles. Thanks.
