    Heey there,

I did an install of the newest iso this time. It got me all up and running, grub, xorg, no mayor problems so far. Thanks for the good work!

There is a few things I wanted to report though:

    Firstly the life-cd:
    Gparted doesn't work;
I have to manually (via konsole) reboot/poweroff
When I start the kde menu entry "storage media", the only thing that's displayed is a floppy drive which is not in my computer, I am unable to see my other harddrives.

    Secondly the installer:
I did a typical install this time, there seem to be no problems whatsoever this time.
The only comment I want to make is on the swap option. Since I have all four primary partitions in use, and a preexisting swappartition, I can't use swap cause the installer doesn't give me the possibility to use the existing one, you can only specify if you would like the installer to create a new one, which is no option for me.

    Finally about the resulting gobolinux:
Nice grub menu! Only i get an odd message saying: "you are about to install 32-bit software on a 64-bit computer."
The first boot into kde I get this error message: "could not start process. Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: . "
Furthermore I noticed that when I use sudo I'm not prompted for my root password and also the kdemenu does not list all application that got installed, there is no entry for gimp for example.

That's it... next I will try getting intel x3100 and intel pro 3945abc to work. Hope this will help you guys improving stuff. If you need any more info or configs let me know,

Concerning swap partitions, I did an installation without specifying anything (but I don't remeber the installer so well atm) and at boot I got it up and mounted automatically, so I think Gobo has indeed some way to recognize them, even when no option is expressly given.

That grub message bothers me and vazub too, as pointed out in this post.
Despite that, Kde starts and everything works just fine. But again, not the same snapshot.

As for ipw3945 Jonas Karlsson made a recipe some time ago which I used without problems. You also have to install two packages -- ipw3945d and ipw3945-ucode -- for the wireless to work.
Just start the daemon at boot, putting a line like

    Exec "Starting IPW3945 daemon" ipw3945d
in the bootup script. Remeber to load the correct module by adding it (namely ipw3945) in the user defined modules section in BootOptions.

    Bye

Yes, the installer automatically detects swap partitions and enables them, both for the LiveCD and for the installed system.

Regarding the other bugs, I will try a *real* install tonight, trying to reproduce some of the bugs reported and see if I can track them down.

    Ok that's fine then!

I wrote down two other things:

-The alsa levels are not set automatically which would have been be nice.
-Grub configured both my Windows and Gobolinux partitions but it didn't detect my other linux operation system on hd0,1.

In this post I'll just write down everything what I think good be done better in future, so don't get me wrong it is not so much complaining, also forgive me if I point out any known issues. I know for some things I should rather be using the bugtracker, but sometimes it might not be a bug but more a kind of request and list for future reference.

Could you please post the output from 'fdisk -l'?

    Some problems using Manager:
When I use the compile comment in Manager and the installer asks me a question ([Y/n) I am unable to respond cause there is no cursor nowhere. So I have to install/compile/remove via konsole.
When I do a search for recipes I have to point the mouse to the search-icon instead of just typing .

Another issue when installing a package (this time via konsole)
When konsole asks me a [Y/n] question is not enough... I have input a 'n' or a 'Y'.

Another problem is not so much related to Gobo but I like to find a solution or 'work around':
The brightness/backlight is set to 100 which means it is killing my eyes. Modifying class/acpi_0/backlight/brightness (something like that) and change the value to 40 does do the trick, but only till next boot. So I have to find a way of permanently setting this value on startup. Probably a script but I wouldn't know how.

    As I said before:
Sound (alsa) is muted at boot. So I have to unmute and set the levels every new boot. I don't know if this is due to the fact 'alsa' isn't started or something tell me how I could check that.

When I want to do a konsole login, to edit xorg.conf for example the system hangs.

These're the reasons which pushed me off from it. I think Manager isn't that usable yet, and using Compile and friends is much much better for now.

This is something I've also noticed before. It shouldn't be difficult to fix it.

There should be a task named Alsactrl which you can start on boot to see what happens.

Just for verification, can you give me an example of a question that has this issue?

Don't forget to stop it at shutdown, or else the settings won't be saved.

I think he's referring to Gobolinux's scripts. For example Compile asks you something like "foo 1.0 already exists, proceed anyway? [Y/n]", and if you just press enter it does nothing unless you explicitly type a y or n.

Judging by the CVS commits, pretty soon. And if they're to be believed, he next release will be 014 final.

For those of you not on the mailing list, there's a "very final release candidate" available: http://www.gobolinux.org/iso/GoboLinux-014-i686.iso or http://gobo.calica.com/gobolinux-iso/GoboLinux-014-i686.iso

Edited: there was an important bugfix and a new ISO produced. As I write this (2007-12-29 04:42 UTC), it's still being uploaded, but it should be done within an hour or two. New MD5: 6c8ac1518b72639ba16f9580f15d4b6f. If you already installed it with no troubles, you don't need to download it again.

If there aren't any major problems with it, it'll be announced as 014 final in a few days, so have at it. And we should all thank Hisham for doing the release management, and everybody else who contributed to the development over the last year and a bit.
